It's not a cult - it's a collective
Alright, so I'll admit it - to the currently Join-Me-Ignorant members of the human race, it all sounds a bit bizarre. But stick with me here, and hopefully you'll realise that there's nothing sinister in this at all – it's all about happiness, randomness and kindness.
It's all down to a guy named Gallus. Who wanted 100 people to live on his farm in Switzerland with him. He got 3 and gave up trying after a week. And then he died. I think there was quite a time gap between the two, but still, that's the essence of the story.
And then his err… great-nephew? Yeah, that'll do. Anyhoos, he (Danny) came along and found out about it and decided to collect the 100 people for him. Not to live on the Swiss farm, but just to Join him. To do so all they had to do is give him a passport-sized photograph of themselves.
And so they did.
And then they wanted something to actually DO, and so Danny had to think of something up.
And so he did. Eventually.
And then he decided to get 1000 people instead. One for every man, woman and child who'd lived in Gallus's Swiss town. But of course.
And so he got 1000.
I mean, of course it wasn't quite as plain sailing as this – that's why there's a whole book out about it (entitled 'Join Me' by Danny Wallace). But if I wrote it all it'd take you a long time to read and would probably break a few copyrighting laws.
Anyways, the whole point of Join Me is…… "The Karma Army". And what we do is to perform a Random Act of Kindness (a RAoK if you will) every Friday. Making every Friday….. Good Friday. Y'see?
And, well, that's it. You send Danny a passport-sized photo and your email address. You can then fill out the questionnaire on the website and email it to him, coz it's tradition. Plus at first he used to work out random statistics such as how many % of the Joinees are male, and what their average age is, and the average amount of children they have each (usually it's been around a quarter).
And then you do your random good deeds every Friday (and as often as possible really) and then you feel happier, as does the person who received the RAoK. And with I guess about 10,000 Joinees that's around 52,000 RAoKs a year. Good huh? And the Joinee community is constantly looking after each other: it's like having 10,000 best friends to be there for you whenever you need. Which is really quite something.
